My computer has been working fine since I got it a good few years ago now but in the last short while it has started to slow down a little now and again if I got to many windows open or programes running at once. It never used to do this. Its running windows xp and has 1gb of ram and 250gb hard drive and 55% of that has been used. Once in a while I have started to noticed that the computer fan may come on for a few mins. Its only started doing that in the last few months. I do a disk clean up almost every day and do a full virus scan twice a week. I also defrag my pc every 5 or 6 weeks. I know in time I may need to think about getting a new computer untill then anyone got any ideas now I could maybe temp sort this computer in the mean time. So I get a chance to save up a little more for a new computer.

Is this a desktop PC or laptop? Most cooling fans run all the time. My desktop PC has three, one for the power supply, one for the cabinet and one for the CPU. All three run all the time, well - when the PC is on that is.

I think your fan needs to be replaced very soon. If that fan stops for any reason, something will overheat and quit. Replace the fan, they are not expensive at all. And they are easy to put in too. But if your not too handy with a soldering iron, find some electronic place to do it for you.

Desktop is coming up for 6 years old. Its it worth replacing the fan. Cooling fan dose come on now and again but not as muchg as maybe it should as You say. The way my desktop is running the now I only feel 97% happy with it at times. Im just thinking desktop may have some other very very minor problems with it as all and although getting desktop fixed sounds good in the short term but as desktop is coming up for 6 years old. Should I still maybe think about getting a new desktop in the next year or so even if I get this desktop upgraded.

It's up to you. Mine is a year older & I have no plans of replacing it. It runs good, does what I need to do. If anything, maybe a used laptop somewhere down the road. Will see.

Think I will see about getting my desktop pc upgraded for now and think about getting a new desktop pc 2 or 3 years from now. I do also have a 8 month old laptop that I use from time to time but its not got as big a hard drive as my desktop pc.
